Wednesday 6th January

1. Today you are going to use your listening skills by going on a listening walk.

Walk around the house or in your garden stopping periodically to listen carefully.

What noises can you hear? What do those noises sound like?

After the walk, see how many of the sounds you can remember. Can you make a list (with pictures or emergent writing) of all the sounds that you can remember?

2. Make a shape picture.

What to do:

  • Make some shape stencils by drawing them on card and cutting them out. eg circle, squares, triangles, rectangles.
  • Show your child how to use the stencil to draw their own shapes. They may need support knowing how to hold the stencil still with one hand while drawing around it with the other (This may require adult help)
  • Together cut out the shapes and talk about the different ones you have made.
  • Now your child can make some pictures, arranging the shapes and sticking them down when they are happy with their position.

What you need:

  • card, children's scissors, pencil, paper, glue

Questions to ask:

  • How can we use a stencil?
  • What shapes have we made?
  • How do you know it is a triangle?
  • Is this a rectangle or a square? How can you tell?
  • What different patterns/pictures could you make?

Extension:

  • Use a greater range of shapes eg hexagon, semi-circle.
