Superheroes - Summer 2
In Summer 2, our topic will be Superheroes, bringing together imagination, literacy, physical development, and personal growth. This exciting theme will empower the children to think about what it means to be a hero—both in stories and in real life—while encouraging them to apply everything they have learned throughout the year.
Exploring Stories and Superhero Characters
-
We will begin the term by exploring the popular and engaging key text: Supertato by Sue Hendra. This fun and imaginative story will help the children identify key characters, follow a simple plot, and explore themes of good versus evil through the adventures of Supertato and the mischievous Evil Pea.
-
Through Supertato, children will practise key comprehension skills such as prediction and inference, and learn exciting new vocabulary linked to superheroes and problem-solving.
-
As the topic develops, children will explore traditional superhero characters, considering questions such as: What is a superhero? and What makes a good one?
-
We will also introduce the concept of a villain, encouraging children to compare their characteristics with those of heroes and reflect on right and wrong.
Literacy and Writing Focus
-
Children will apply their phonics knowledge and sentence writing skills across a range of superhero-themed tasks, including:
-
Describing and designing their own superhero characters
-
Writing wanted posters for villains like the Evil Pea
-
Writing messages and reports from the Superhero Headquarters to solve problems and complete missions
-
-
These activities will give children the opportunity to showcase their progress and independence in writing.
Role-Play and Creative Learning
-
Our role-play area will transform into a vibrant Superhero Headquarters, where children can dress up, take on superhero roles, and solve imaginative problems.
-
They will use writing to record missions, send messages, and leave clues.
-
Creative activities will include designing superhero costumes, masks, logos, and gadgets, using a range of media and materials.
Personal, Social, and Emotional Development
-
We will explore the qualities of a superhero, such as courage, kindness, and responsibility, and discuss how these traits appear in everyday life.
-
Children will reflect on how they can be everyday heroes, by helping others, making good choices, and showing resilience.
-
Throughout the term, the children will work together to complete a very important superhero mission, using teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
Physical Development and Healthy Living
-
As part of Healthy Living Week, children will explore how to keep their bodies strong and healthy, with a focus on:
-
Healthy eating
-
Exercise and movement
-
Sleep and hygiene
-
Taking care of our emotions and minds
-
-
Activities will include superhero obstacle courses, fitness trials, healthy snack-making, and learning about real-life heroes like doctors, nurses, and emergency responders.
Understanding the World
-
We will explore the idea of real-life superheroes, such as police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and teachers.
-
Children will compare fantasy superheroes to these everyday heroes, understanding the important roles people play in keeping us safe and helping our communities.
End-of-Year Celebration
-
To round off the year, the children will become official superheroes, applying everything they’ve learned in Reception to complete a final superhero mission.
-
This fun and celebratory challenge will bring together skills in reading, writing, maths, teamwork, and creativity—marking a joyful end to their first year of school and celebrating their growth and independence.
