Traditional Stories and Rhymes - Autumn 2

In Autumn 2, our topic will be Traditional Stories and Rhymes, offering exciting opportunities for the children to explore much-loved tales, develop their language and imagination, and learn through hands-on activities and continuous provision.

Key Stories:

  • Goldilocks and the Three Bears – We will explore characters, settings and story events, developing vocabulary and encouraging the children to retell the story in their own words.

  • The Three Billy Goats Gruff – Through this traditional tale, the children will explore sequencing, repeated refrains and story language, while developing their confidence in storytelling and role play.

Literacy and Writing Focus

We will enjoy a range of traditional stories, rhymes and non-fiction texts to develop comprehension, vocabulary and a love of reading. The children will practise their phonics, begin writing captions and sentences using their growing phonic knowledge, and explore story writing through Drawing Club.

Maths

The children will develop their understanding of number, shape, space and measure through daily maths sessions and purposeful play. We will explore numbers to 5, 2D shapes, patterns, mass, capacity, length, height and time, with opportunities to apply their learning in the classroom and outdoors.

Exploring the World

We will explore the changing seasons and weather, compare life in the past with our lives today, and investigate how bread is made. The children will also learn about Remembrance Day and explore different celebrations, including Diwali and Christmas.

Creative and Expressive Learning

The children will have opportunities to create artwork inspired by our stories, exploring colour, collage and a range of materials and techniques. They will also develop their musical skills through singing, rhythm and movement, and enjoy imaginative role play linked to our traditional tales.

Personal, Social, and Emotional Development

Through our stories, daily routines and play, we will continue to support the children in developing friendships, independence and emotional awareness. We will explore the Zones of Regulation, helping children recognise their feelings and begin to use strategies to manage their emotions.

Christmas Celebrations

A very special part of our term will be preparing for and performing our Christmas Nativity. The children will have the opportunity to sing, act and share the magic of Christmas with their families. We will also enjoy Christmas crafts and other festive activities throughout the term.
