P.E
Physical Education
At Homefields Primary School, we believe that every child deserves to experience the joy and benefits of being physically active. Our PE curriculum is Physical Literacy informed, placing the whole child at the heart of learning. We want every pupil to develop the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and enjoy being active throughout their lives.
Our curriculum is built around the four strands of Physical Literacy:
- Move – developing movement competence, fundamental movement skills and physical confidence.
- Think – applying knowledge, making decisions, solving problems and understanding how and why we move.
- Feel – building confidence, resilience, motivation and a positive attitude towards physical activity.
- Connect – working collaboratively, communicating effectively, showing respect and developing positive relationships through movement.
We use Chris Quigley's milestones to ensure that learning is carefully sequenced and that knowledge and skills progress throughout each year group. Lessons are planned using the Oak National Academy PE curriculum, providing a broad, balanced and progressive programme that enables children to revisit, practise and build upon their learning over time.
Children in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 receive one PE lesson each week delivered by our specialist coaching partners, AM Sport, alongside one lesson taught by school staff. This combination allows pupils to benefit from specialist coaching while ensuring that PE remains fully integrated within our wider curriculum and school values.
Our curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to experience a wide range of activities, including invasion games, striking and fielding, net and wall games, athletics, gymnastics, dance, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming. Through these experiences, children develop fundamental movement skills before applying them in increasingly challenging and enjoyable contexts.
We are committed to providing an inclusive curriculum where every child can participate, experience success and be challenged appropriately regardless of their starting point. Our lessons encourage children to take risks, persevere when faced with challenges, celebrate one another's achievements and develop a lifelong appreciation of physical activity.
Through PE, we aim for all children to:
- develop confidence and competence across a broad range of physical activities;
- understand the importance of leading an active and healthy lifestyle;
- demonstrate resilience, teamwork, leadership and respect;
- think critically about their own performance and identify ways to improve;
- enjoy participating in physical activity both in school and beyond;
- leave Homefields equipped with the skills, knowledge and motivation to remain physically active throughout their lives.
Children in Year 5 participate in swimming lessons, where they work towards meeting the National Curriculum expectation of swimming at least 25 metres confidently and demonstrating safe self-rescue skills in water.
We believe that high-quality physical education inspires children to be active, healthy and confident, enabling them to flourish both within school and throughout their lives.
